The Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) is an undergraduate program designed to provide fundamental knowledge and practical skills in pharmaceutical sciences. This program is essential for those pursuing a career in pharmacy, combining principles of health science and chemical science.
At Moulana College of Pharmacy, the D.Pharm program prepares students for professional roles as registered pharmacists through comprehensive education and hands-on training. Graduates are equipped to work in various pharmacy settings, including government and private sectors, and are prepared to meet industry standards and contribute effectively to the healthcare field.
To be eligible for admission to the D.Pharm program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
– Higher Secondary Examination (10+2): Candidates should have passed the Higher Secondary Exam (+2) from the Kerala State Board with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics as optional subjects, or an equivalent examination.
OR
– V.H.S.C of Kerala: Candidates from the V.H.S.C of Kerala (1994-95 session) with Group A or B are also eligible. Group A includes the N.C.E.R.T syllabus in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, while Group B includes the N.C.E.R.T syllabus in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
The selection process for the D.Pharm program is as follows:
– Merit Seats: Out of the 60 available seats, 50% are merit-based. Admission to these seats will be based on the merit list prepared from the marks obtained in Physics and Chemistry in the qualifying examination.
– Management Seats: The remaining 50% of seats are reserved for management quota. Admission to these seats will be based on a merit list prepared from the marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics in the qualifying examination.
The D.Pharm course extends over two academic years, with each year comprising not less than 180 working days. The program is divided into two parts:
– Part I: Covers subjects taught in the first year.
– Part II: Covers subjects taught in the second year.
– Pharmaceutics – I: Fundamentals of pharmaceutical dosage forms and their preparation.
– Pharmaceutical Chemistry – I: Basic principles of pharmaceutical chemistry.
– Pharmacognosy: Study of medicinal plants and natural products.
– Human Anatomy & Physiology: Basic anatomy and physiology relevant to pharmacy.
– Social Pharmacy: Concepts of public health and social aspects of pharmacy.
– Pharmacology: Study of drug actions and interactions.
– Community Pharmacy & Management: Principles of community pharmacy and its management.
– Biochemistry & Clinical Pathology: Fundamentals of biochemistry and its application in clinical settings.
– Pharmacotherapeutics: Study of therapeutic uses of drugs.
– Hospital and Clinical Pharmacy: Pharmacy practice in hospital settings.
– Pharmacy Law & Ethics: Legal and ethical aspects of pharmacy practice.
Upon successful completion of the theoretical coursework, candidates are required to undergo 500 hours of practical training. This training must be completed over a period of at least 3 months at a government hospital or a recognized institute approved by the Pharmacy Council of India.
